Five Things for the Week of August 25, 2025.
One: Yazoo Land Scandal
I realized the other day that the browser on my phone has something like 222 open tabs on it. A lot of this is terrible crap, but I’ve also developed this habit of coming across something that looks interesting that I want to read or look into at some point, so I open up a tab and Google it, and then move on, thinking I’ll come back to it later. And then, often, I never do. Which is how you get 222 open tabs.
Anyway, here’s just a brief selection of my currently open tabs. At this point I’m not even sure I remember what made me think of most of these things. But I’m putting them here in case there’s some interesting rabbit holes you’d like to fall down.
Here’s the first tab: the Yazoo Land Scandal.

Historical Marker of the Yazoo Fraud.
Two: Ireland Shakespeare Forgeries
This is right next to the Yazoo tab; I think I was in some library somewhere and saw references to both, somehow. Who can possibly say.

Shakespeare Forgery.
Three: Cairo’s City of the Dead
Some amazing photographs here, and a fascinating history, in a story about how Cairo’s necropolis is under threat from development. This piece is from July of 2024; I looked this up to see what the latest is, and found this.

Photograph by Hussein Omar.
Four: On the Many Hauntings of Langston Hughes
Nick Ripatrazone considers the poet’s close encounters with the supernatural.

Langston Hughes.
Five: The Yuba County Five
[Editor’s Note: The thumbnail image for this week is from Sol Exposure’s Aged Polaroids series, which is another open tab on my phone; you can learn more about those here. Also! That’s only 6 of 222 tabs! I’ll probably do more of these in the future, unless you all tell me you hate them.]
