Five Things for the Week of December 29, 2025.
[This week I wanted to share links to some of my favorite newsletters by some of my favorite writers and people. So here are five great things you can subscribe to if you’d like more cool things to read.]
One: Future Recuperation
One of my favorite writers, Sarah McCarry, doesn’t post to her newsletter often, but when she does it’s an event; her writing is fearless and luminescent. This is an older post, but starts with one of my favorites, Caspar David Friedrich, and spins out from there to complex and varied places about memory, ruin, and trauma.
Two: Perfect Sentences
Ingrid Burrington’s newsletter, “Perfect Sentences,” contains exactly what you’d expect. I’m a new convert to it, and it really hits in all the best ways. Lots of gems right here.
Three: This, Not That
Levi Stahl’s “This, Not That” is another great, and often brief newsletter that’s a delight to receive. Often a collection of capsule reviews of books, films, and other things that he’s enjoying, it also often opens up into delightfully unexpected directions. Here’s a collection of quotes on and about boredom.
Four: Tales from Meg
Meg Elison’s newsletters have long been a source of joy for me, but recently she’s embarked on a series entitled “Tales from the Underpaid,” which is truly fantastic.
“Managers aren’t allowed at these parties. They sometimes show up anyway, like the time GM Dave got blackout drunk and casually dropped his balls into a lady’s beer. Like ASM Jackie who walked in and asked ‘Who am I cheating on my husband with tonight?’ and awkwardly waited for an answer.”
Five: I Have That on Vinyl
Michele Catalano’s ongoing loveletter to music and vinyl is a fantastic place to dive deep into (and I mean this in the best, most complimentary way possible) music snobbery and the art of cultivating taste. Here’s a great piece about Toto.
