Five Things for the Week of May 11, 2026.
One
For Christmas, my brother sent me (among other things) this collection of souvenir postcards from the International Eastern Star Temple in Washington, D. C. Eastern Star is basically the women’s auxiliary organization of the Freemason’s; our grandmother was a member (he reports that he found them in a box of our mother’s things).
According to our mother, our grandfather joined the Freemason’s because, as an Italian immigrant, he saw himself regularly get passed over for job opportunities, but saw that his boss was a Mason and that he gave special attention to his co-workers who were also Masons, so decided to join. As it became more and more a part of his social life, our grandmother decided to join the Eastern Star, and, according to our mother, she really blossomed. Up until that point, she’d been quite introverted and unsure of herself, but she became respected and confident as a member of her Eastern Star chapter, serving as Treasurer and making a number of friends along the way.
The post cards came with this ticket for a banquet from 1976. We’re guessing that they were perhaps given out as party favors for the banquet? Unclear. There’s a bunch; this week, a small selection.
